About Us
Scheduled to open in the Fall of 2007, Katie’s Cup
Coffee bar is a community gathering place for
conversation, coffee, books, and entertainment, offering
a comfortable and stimulating atmosphere for discussion
of today's important issues and ministries through the
lens of faith.
Both the Old and New Testaments make clear that as
people of faith we are called into community. This is a
hunger that extends throughout all of humanity - a
hunger to find places of relevance where people can
congregate and converse. Lenore Skenazy of the New York
Sun writes eloquently of an estimated 30 million
Americans who are looking to find community outside of
work and home in what she calls a “third place” where
people can “hang out, [and] be a part of the stream of
life…”
Katie's Cup Coffee bar provides a hospitable environment
in a resurgent downtown area in which to drink coffee,
share a meal, conduct seminars, hold discussions, be
entertained, buy books and a variety of fair-trade
coffee products, and experience friendship and
community. Katie’s Cup is an information-rich and
creative setting for conversations - an essential
ingredient in building and maintaining a vibrant faith
community and witness. Katie's Cup gives Rockford a
venue to encourage urban renewal and focus on life's
bigger issues through the lens of faith.
Katie's Cup Coffeebar is a collaborative Seventh Street
revitalization effort between ZION Development Corp. and
Rockford Area Lutheran Ministries. ZION, a 24-year old
faith-based neighborhood organization, has completed a
number of large and small neighborhood development
projects in Rockford's Midtown District. Rockford Area
Lutheran Ministries, a coalition of 22 area ELCA
churches, has a 22-year history of leadership in the
development of community projects and ministry programs.
